Up to now, the country established a total of 2740 nature reserves, with a total area of ​​1.47 million square kilometers, accounting for land area of ​​14.83%, higher than the world average. There are more than 90% of the terrestrial natural ecosystem types in the country, about 89% of the national key protected wildlife species, and most important natural relics are protected in nature reserves, and some of the rare and endangered species are gradually restored. These achievements are not easy to summarize and adhere to the government-led sector linkage, deal with the development and protection of relations, strict law enforcement supervision, the whole society to participate in, in-depth international cooperation and other experience.

Chen Jining said that the "13th Five-Year Plan" clearly put forward "to strengthen the construction and management of nature reserves, increase the typical ecosystems, species, genes and landscape diversity protection."
